Gio Ponti (1891-1979)
Gio Ponti is one of the most important and popular architects and designers of the 20th century. His objects and furniture can be found in every major design collection. Many of his pieces have become outstanding icons of modern design, e.g. the „Supperleggera“ chair or the „Pavoni“ coffeemachine.
Ponti's work developed from Milanese neo-classicism to Italian design in the second half of the 20th century, and became an international milestone. It covers a wide range, from huge skyscrapers to tiny everyday pieces. Ponti's moderate rationalism is loosened up by details full of fantasy and creativity, sometimes even pictorial. Ponti's designs appear to be formally reduced but nevertheless ensouled with organic inspiration. |
